How to Install a Tile Backsplash in Your Laundry Room

One of my most love posts on social media is a before and after of our laundry room. We went went from builder-grade blah to coastal modern gorgeous. And, a big part of that transformation was the laundry room backsplash tile. So, in today’s post, I’m going to tell you where you can get that tile and share how this project is a little different than a kitchen backsplash.

  • Active Time: 4-5 hours
  • Total Time: 2 days
  • Power Tools Needed: Wet saw, driver, drill (we rented the wet saw from Home Depot)
  • Cost: $250, including wet saw rental. (will vary based on the tile you choose)
  • Difficulty Level: Intermediate
  • Help Needed?: If you absolutely wanted to, you could PROBABlY do this solo. BUT, it’s a whole lot easier with a helper for a few steps.

How To Step-By-Step

I have 3 other posts detailing exactly how to install a backsplash, from our 2 previous kitchens. So, I’m not going to repeat those how to steps again. Here’s links to both to check out:

But. What I am going to do is share how the laundry room backsplash tile install was a little different than a kitchen backsplash. And, I’ll share tips to avoid mistakes I made.

Smaller Space= More Budget Friendly

The biggest perk of installing a laundry room backsplash tile was we could use a more pricey tile since the space was a lot smaller.

But, it also means you can save money if you’re looking to spend as little money as possible.

No Pre-Defined Borders

The hardest part for me in installing the laundry room backsplash tile was that there were no predefined borders (kitchen counter and the cabinets).

So, I spent a ton of time trying to decide how low to install our laundry room backsplash tile, as well as where to place our shelves to accommodate our tile.

In fact, I wanted to do a different chevron type pattern with the tile, but I miscalculated the space I would need to do that and built the shelves at the wrong heights.

I left the shelves as-is and went with the vertical pattern instead (which ended up looking perfect in that space). But, I was really mad at myself for a few days for not calculating the space right.

So, learn from my mistake, and make sure you measure out exactly how much space you need for your tile and design before you start.

Working Around Washer/Dryer Connections

Working around the washer and dryer connections was a little trickier than just working around an outlet in the kitchen.

Tip: You’ll need to disconnect the washer and dryer from the hookups before the install starts. It’ll make install so much easier, as well as keep your appliances protected from any tiling mess you may make.

They required a few more intricate cuts than regular outlets do, which is where the wet saw comes in.

We tried to get away without a wet saw for this install, and it made things significantly more challenging because we couldn’t easily make those intricate cuts.

So, learn from me: buy or rent or borrow a wet saw.

And, the Biggest Question I Get About This Space. . .

Where did you get that tile from?

That tile is Villa Seaside Polished Ceramic Tile from Floor and Decor. I am absolutely obsessed with it. We bought it for the kitchen when we moved into our home, and then decided to go in a different direction.

But I kept this tile because I loved it so much. I was determined to find a home for it.

And, the laundry room backsplash is the absolute perfect place for it.

Not Ready to Tackle Tiling?

You don’t need to tile to create an amazing backsplash tile look in your laundry room! Check out wallpaper or peel and stick tile options to get you a great focal point, without tile.
