One Room Challenge Fall 2022 Prep
Hi friends! I’m so excited that I FINALLY get to participate in the One Room Challenge this Fall 2022! I’m pretty sure the last few I’ve been pregnant, just had a baby, or in the process of a multi-state move, so the timing finally works.
And, while I’d love to transform one of our bigger spaces, like our breakfast room, our family room, or our bedroom, they’re just not in the budget this fall. So, I decided to focus on a space we spend time in several times a week that needs a lot of love to be more pretty AND more functional:
Our Home Gym!
Here’s a quick look at how it looks right now.
This is our second floor loft space. It started as a second floor lounge area and play space for Emory.
But, when I got pregnant with Hazel, we knew my office/gym space would become Hazel’s nursery.
So, last year, we moved the playroom to the dining room.
This summer we moved my office to the third floor and made an awesome cloffice space.
And, the gym moved into this loft, along with the remnants of my old desk, our extra kids books, the door from the laundry room, and anything else that is missing a home at the moment.
So, it’s time to give the gym some love!
My Goals for the Home Gym
It always helps me when I start a project to list out what my goals are for the space. This helps me remember the feel I want the space to have, along with any must-have pieces of furniture or functions for the space.
My goal for the design of the home gym for One Room Challenge 2022 is to keep the coastal feel of our home running through this new space. And, here are my goals for the space overall:
A Building Project (or 2)
I’ve got a lot to fit in a 10′ x 10′ space, so I’m going to try to build a few vertical storage options as part of the One Room Challenge Fall 2022. I’m learning that I love building things, so any chance to build something, I’m taking full advantage.
I’m going to build a small weight rack for our hand weights and kettle bells to go under the tv.
And, I’m going to build a large peg wall for added storage of our shoes, workout dvds, towels, bands, etc.
Both these pieces should add a ton of functional storage and also help me pull in more natural wood tones into the space.
I don’t have any plans for either piece, so I’m going to be winging it. Wish me luck!
Dedicated Workout Spaces
Steve and I share this space, so we need to make sure there’s room for the different types of workouts we both enjoy: our Peloton bike, my ballet barre for barre workouts, and yoga and bootcamp classes on the floor.
We have all the equipment for all these things, but arranging them to make sure each spot has enough space for each type of workout is crucial. So, we’re just going to have to see how the space feels once the project starts.
Design Details
I know home gyms aren’t known for their design aesthetic, but I’m definitely more likely to spend time in a clean and pretty space, (and I’m a home decor and DIY content creator), so you know, that’s super important to me.
I’m going to stick with the coastal feel we’re aiming for in the rest of our home. And, I’ll definitely be bringing in some color again. I’m thinking blues and greens and natural wood tones.
And, if I can try out a new trim work or feature wall technique, I’m always down!
Let’s Talk About the Budget
Budget was a big factor in deciding to renovate the homy gym. We’ve done a lot of big projects this year already. And had a baby. And it’s almost Christmas.
So, the home gym was a great choice because we have all the big expensive things. They just need some organizing and a little love to become a prettier and more functional space.
I anticipate the biggest expense will be lumber for the two building projects and mirrors for the barre area. My goal is to keep our budget under $250. Let’s see how that goes!
Recap & What’s Up First?
So, with all that, here’s what I have planned over the next 8 weeks for my coastal home gym refresh as part of One Room Challenge Fall 2022:
- Dedicated space for the peloton bike
- Mount barre and add wall mirrors around it
- Mount tv for yoga, barre, and floor workouts
- Build a weight rack
- Build a large peg wall for added vertical storage
- Paint the walls and possible add a feature wall behind the bike
All for a budget of $250.
Tell me: what do you think?
WIll I stay in budget?
Does the design sound like it’ll work?
Can I finish all this in 8 weeks?
And maybe the biggest question, can I finish it without starting another project?
