The Before
So, here’s where we started. We didn’t spend any money on the laundry room at the design center. Basic washer and dryer, free gray builder tile, standard wire shelf, and of course, the traditional boob light.
We always knew we’d add more storage for this space, but we were just so happy to have a laundry room on the second floor (it was in the basement in our previous home), we didn’t really need much else!
But, after a year of living here and no updates, it needed a little help. That one wire shelf wasn’t the functional storage we needed as a now-family of 4. Especially since we don’t have a linen closet.
With our budget being tight for new projects this year, I planned on focusing on small spaces that we used frequently, to get the most out of our limited budgets. So, after we tackled the under the stairs closet, the laundry room moved right to the top of the list.
What Projects Were Completed
Here’s a list of mini-projects we undertook to transform this laundry room to its new look:
- Painted the space a crisp white to brighten it up (Extra White by Sherwin Williams)
- Built shelving over the washer/dryer to add much-needed functional storage
- Built a hanging drying rack to reduce floor space use
- Replaced the boob light with this gorgeous light from Lights.com, adding more light and giving the room a much-needed natural element
- Added this beautiful teal tile as a backsplash and beadboard to the ceiling to add a few coastal vibes to the space
The Reveal!
What do y’all think?! Here’s our coastal modern laundry room!
The main goals of this space were to:
- adopt a coastal modern vibe, embracing our island living without feeling like a vacation rental
- add functional storage to our second floor
- make the space feel brighter without adding any lighting.
How Did We Save Money in our Laundry Room Refresh?
I focused on budget-friendly ways to stretch our budget. The big splurge was the light fixture (at $100). After that, I focused on making a statement in smaller ways, like:
- Built my own shelving, instead of buying cabinets
- Built my own drying rack, instead of buying one
- Placing beadboard and trim work on the ceiling, instead of using it on all the walls
- Using tile we had purchased for a different project and didn’t use
- Went “shopping” in our garage for paint, grout, mortar, stain, and about 1/3 of the lumber we used for the project
