From a Dining Room. . .

The girls’ playroom started as our dining room in our new home. It had been empty for months, as we prioritized other projects over building a dining room table and decorating the room.

While I love a formal dining room, realistically we aren’t going to use it more than a few times a year, especially since we have a large breakfast room that can fit 6-8 people with our current table.

We use our playroom several times a day. And, having the playroom on the first floor with young kids was ideal for our lifestyle.

Originally, our playroom was in our second floor loft. But, with baby girl #2 on the way, that loft was taken over by our gym and my office to make room for a nursery. And, that left us without a playroom. So, it just made sense to use the empty dining room space as our new playroom.

I just love how fun this space is now! The pops of pink and green, the polkadots on the wall and pillows, E’s artwork hanging on the wall, and the llama rug. Each little nook adds to the feel of the room.

Budget-Focused Makeover

This playroom makeover was definitely a budget-focused project. With all the expenses of a new house this year and me being a new stay at home mom, and adding a new baby to our family, we really needed to complete this project for as little money as possible.

So, I repurposed furniture from other rooms. And, the furniture I bought (table and chairs and bookshelves), I bought from Marketplace and refinished with paint.

I reused paint from previous projects to transform the space.

And, our big purchases were reserved for birthday and Christmas. E’s cute play kitchen was her big gift for her birthday and Christmas. Our super cute llama rug from Ruggable was my birthday gift from my parents and mother in law.

In the end we only spent about $100 for the whole playroom makeover! This project definitely proved to me you can undertake a full room makeover and be creative to stay within a small budget.

Projects Completed

Here’s a list of all the projects I completed to transform this dining room into our girls’ playroom:

Timeline

If I had only been focused on the playroom, this makeover would have taken 2 weeks of project time.

But in reality, this took about 5 months. Between pregnancy fatigue and trying to tackle a few other projects at the same time and waiting for the rug to ship, things took a whole lot longer.

The Perfect Place for the Girls to Play

But in the end, this project was 10000% worth the time it took. It has become Emory’s second home. She plays in it several times a day, often by herself while I’m busy around the house.

And, it makes me smile every time I walk into it.

To me, this was the perfect project. Budget-friendly, beautiful, and fits its exact purpose.
