Reveal Time: The Under the Stairs Closet Remodel!

Hi friends! I’m so excited to reveal our under the stairs closet remodel today!

Our under the stairs closet is a place I’ve been wanting to perfect since we moved into our home last year. But, I didn’t know quite what I wanted to do with the space. Check out this before video of how unhelpful it was before the closet remodel:

It’s really the main indoor storage space for our home, so it needed to be super functional.

But, it also needed to be pretty because, why not?

As we’ve been getting closer and closer to new baby’s arrival, this project quickly moved to the top of the list. We need as much functioning storage as possible, to help save my sanity when there’s two babies to take care of in a little bit.

Brand New Look

I’m no good at building suspense, so here’s our new under the stairs closet!

I added new, brighter lighting to better see what’s in the space.

I added removal wallpaper to give the space a fun new feel.

I removed the wire shelf and added laminate shelving to give us tons of visible storage to make the space more functional.

I kept the cleaning tools on the wall, but moved the vacuum mount, so we no longer ran into it when walking back into the closet.

And, I hung up some of our holiday decor to get it off the floor.

More Functional Storage

The main purpose of this closet remodel was to make the space as functional as possible, and I think we definitely succeeded.

Before the remodel, this closet served as a catch-all for seasonal items, holiday decor, cleaning supplies, and extra food that didn’t fit in the pantry. But, we could never find what we needed because it was buried in a cardboard box, or behind four other things on the floor.

Now, the shelving clearly displays what’s in the space, making our grocery shopping and meal prep oh-so-much easier. And, I’m not hunting for our coolers and picnic blanket when planning a family outing over a nice weekend.

And, I was able to add a dedicated space for Emory’s craft and coloring items! That allowed me to move that stuff out of our kitchen cabinets and make more room for kitchen items in the kitchen.

An Easy Weekend Project

Once the planning is done, this is easily a simple weekend project for any DIYer! And, to be honest, you can probably get it all done in one day. It took me a little longer since I was 7.5 months pregnant when I completed this closet remodel, so I had my dad come and help getting the shelving installed.

Here’s a quick look at individual projects that went into this closet remodel:

  • Remove wire shelving and patch drywall holes
  • Replace ceiling light (here’s a tutorial from a previous project)
  • Hang removal wallpaper (will link this tutorial when completed)
  • Install laminate shelving (will link this tutorial when completed)
  • Move vacuum wall-mount to shelving wall and hang holiday decor
  • Paint touch-ups

Now, at least one space is ready for the new baby –hopefully I’ll stop procrastinating and get the nursery done in the next few weeks 🙂
